1949 Chevrolet Fleetline Deluxe Aerosedan

Regardless of its 60 years life span, this beautiful Chevrolet Fleetline from Sancti Spiritus is in excellent shape. The proud owner told us that it's still running with the original six-cylinder engine, only the piston-rings had to be replaced from time to time. "And of course", he added, "el carro needs always a lot of oil".

Maybe not as radically new as the 1949 Ford, Chevrolet's first post-war design arrived right at the beginning of the style-hungry 50s. Mechanically, it was about the same construction as the pre-war Chevrolets, but now with an elegant and sleek new skin. The stylish Aerosedans, or torpedos, as they are called in Cuba, were the latest automotive fashion right after the war, and of course GM was at the forefront of this design innovation.

The demand for new cars was huge: during the war the car companies produced weapons, and civilian car production had been halted for 4 years. Until 1949, Chevrolet had been selling it's pre-war cars with just some optical touch-ups, and naturally the customers went crazy for the new lineup. The result was a record-selling 1.01 million units in 1949.

The 1950 Chevrolet showed only minor changes in the front-grille: Chevrolet didn't enter yet into the habit of the annual major restyling, which became a typical marketing instrument during the 50s and 60s.
